Metals can be dug up from the ground. Gold, iron, copper and aluminium are metals that are found naturally in the ground. Gold is used to make jewellery. Iron is used to make gates and railings. Copper is used to make electrical wires and cooking pots. Aluminium is used to make drink cans, window frames and aeroplanes.
Ceramic is a material made from clay. Clay can be found in soil dug from the ground. Ceramic can be used to make vases, bowls, plates, cups, bricks, toilets and even man-made teeth. Ceramic needs to be shaped. It then needs to be dried or fire-baked in a hot oven. Heating hardens ceramic, but it can break easily.
